Southampton’s Nigel Adkins came close on a few occasions to being voted as manager of the month, and received the dreaded chalice once at the end of the season as we won the race to second spot in the table.

Phil Parkinson won the award in November and then managed to get the boot after a poor run.

Alan Irvine won the first of the season but it again did not do him or his side any good as they fell away.

Gus Poyet won the award twice and had a great season with his side finishing up as champions.

Other managers who got an award were Andy Scott, Mick Wadsworth, Keith Hill and Darren Ferguson.

Brighton, Southampton and Peterborough all ended up winning promotion so it is hardly surprising that each club’s manager managed to win an award, and in Gus Poyet’s case two.

Statistically Nigel Adkins probably had the best results of the season. Southampton had played five games in the league when he took over. With one win, one draw and three defeats he took on a side that was playing well below all hopes and expectations.

This meant Nigel Adkins began with a team on a poor run and his first game in charge saw us lose at home, though he had hardly had time to get to know the players. Next was a trip to Wednesday where he gained his first win and the tide quickly began to change for the better.

All in all he took charge in 41 league games and we won 27, drew 7 and lost 7. This is a great return considering the start that was made, and leaves the question as to how we might have done with him in charge from the off.

Maybe I will be accused of being biased but for me Nigel Adkins is the manager that best deserves to be rated as Manager of the Season. Brighton followers will no doubt disagree as his side finished the season as champions.

They will say that their team relaxed after winning the title but when we beat them away on our run to the line they certainly hadn’t taken their foot of the gas.

Rightly or not I pick Nigel Adkins as the man who deserves the title of Manager Of The Season.
