Late yesterday evening, Southampton confirmed that Academy graduate Josh Sims had now agreed a move to the MLS and he will spend the first half of the 2019/20 campaign out on loan with New York Red Bulls.

The 22-year-old has made 27 first team appearances at St Mary’s Stadium after making his breakthrough from our youth ranks, and there will have been plenty of fans who were hoping to see a bit more of him under manager Ralph Hasenhuttl this season. Instead, he’ll get a taste of life in the US but he should get good game time out there in fairness.

Prior to the move being rubber stamped, Sims put pen to paper on a new 12 month extension to his contract so clearly the club haven’t closed the door on him having a greater impact for us in the future just yet and Hasenhuttl will no doubt reassess his form for the second half of the season given he returns to us on January 1.

Hopefully he’ll really make an impression whilst he’s out there.
