It was another disappointing day for Southampton fans as we welcomed Liverpool to St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday for our second Premier League clash of the 2019/20 campaign.

With a goal in each half from former player Sadio Mane and Firmino, we did have Danny Ings’ 83rd minute effort to celebrate but it was only a consolation on the day and came about from a bizarre goalkeeping error.

With far less of the ball, we almost matched them though when it came to chances and that will have been a positive for manager Ralph Hasenhuttl and he knew in many ways it was our inability to finish that had cost us – but our newbies are still settling in so there’s reason for hope.

Statistics website Whoscored probably predictably gave us some poor player ratings, but Ings took Man of the Match with a rating of 7.18.

He was the only player to get a seven plus rating, with Yan Valery (6.91), Angus Gunn (6.79), James Ward-Prowse (6.79), and Jannik Vestergaard (6.70) completing the top five on the day.

In many ways, perform like that, but take our chances, and we’ll win more than enough against others in the division to have a happier season than 2018/19 and ultimately that’s all this year of transition is about.
