7 Clearances, 1 Key Pass & 8 Aerials Won Sees Reliable Saints Man Impress For MotM On A Poor Saturday

Southampton had a poor opening day to the 2019/20 Premier League campaign as we capitulated to a 3-0 defeat to Burnley at Turf Moor.

At least that’s what the history books will suggest but the game was far closer than that in reality, but defensive errors allied to us simply not taking our chances, when Burnley did, was the real difference in the game. As manager Ralph Hasenhuttl noted post-game, we were largely on top for the first hour but didn’t make it count and created our own problems in the final 30 and the conditions certainly played their part, but we have to deal with that in the future.

Given the scoreline, it’s not a surprise to see statistics website Whoscored score us poorly on the day, but centre-half Jan Bednarek did take their Man of the Match award with a player rating of 6.75.

Completing the top five on the day were James Ward-Prowse (6.43), Jannik Vestergaard (6.33), Ryan Bertrand (6.30) and Danny Ings (6.21) but we’ll definitely be looking for better in the next match.
