The season has gone and we have all regained our breath which we held for so long as we fought for our survival in the Premier League. The question now is, who could be worthwhile targets to help improve our squad/team.
There have been numerous rumours regarding possible transfers in and out. Our worst-case scenario would see Alex McCarthy, Ryan Bertrand, Cedric Soares, Manolo Gabbiadini, Mario Lemina, Dusan Tadic and Sam McQueen all leave St Mary’s.
How many of them do leave could be down to the players that we are able to recruit. If we bring in a couple of good players that will help persuade some to stay I would hope.
So who can we look at as possible targets?
For me, Alfie Mawson could be a good fit. The Swansea centre-back had an ok season and could fit straight into our back-line. Whether he could lead the line though is another matter. Swansea getting relegated doesn’t help his cause.
I also hear rumours surrounding Ben Gibson as a possible target. Gibson is a strong player and I feel he could possibly do well for us, and lead the line. He has stayed at Middlesborough partly through family loyalty, being a local lad and related to the chairman.
Again, we have a player in Ben that also suffered relegation with his side dropping down to the Championship two seasons ago. That then might leave the door open for a Newcastle defender to appeal as a serious candidate.
Jamaal Lascelles has had a good season for Newcastle and is their captain. He has reached the attention of both Chelsea and Tottenham if reports are true but would certainly be a good signing if we could sneak him in on the quiet.
Three centre-backs as possibles but our biggest concern right now must be the goalkeeping position. We have had numerous rumours regarding the interest shown in Alex McCarthy and that could possibly leave us with a serious problem. The only alternative possibility we have at the moment is the totally out of form slow and ponderous Fraser Forster.
Alex finally got his chance at the end of 2017/18 and hasn’t looked back. Fraser had by far the worst start to a season that he ever has. His confidence was shot and he became a damaging liability as he made some crucial errors and failed to perform.
We need a goalkeeper as cover even if Alex stays. There are not many out there with decent Premier League experience but Tom Heaton of Burnley could be tempted. Fellow England goalkeeper Jack Butland is another that may be looking to leave his club but will not be cheap, and will not want to be 2nd choice.
Well, that is two positions mentioned. The next article will discuss others that we need to strengthen.
