Nigel Adkins was left desperately disappointed by our performance against Leeds in the Cup, and he didn’t pull many punches when talking about the game.

Speaking to saintsfc after making 11 changes and seeing us go down 3-0, Adkins said.

‘It was a poor result for us. The mindset before the game was to be very positive. The objective was to get on the front foot by utilising pace and getting in behind. It was a very attacking formation on paper, but on the pitch you have got to go and produce it. You’re playing for Southampton, so every game matters. We’ve put out a team that I expected to win this game. I expect the players to go and perform, so obviously there’s going to be consequences of the result and performance for many people.’

Adkins did however shoulder the responsibility for the result as is his role as manager, but there’s no hiding his disappointment in the performance of the players he put out.
