Millwall put wave after wave of attacks onto the patched-up defence that Southampton had been able to muster. Jose Fonte, Jos Hooiveldt, and Dan Seaborne were still out injured, and Radhi Jaidi finally had a place on the bench. Butterfield at right back is out and Richardson has come back from injury.
With Bartozs Bialkowski in for Kelvin Davis the fans were left pondering as to which Bartman would show up for the game. The one who had a nightmare against Blackpool or a player full of confidence and a capable stand-in for our Kelvin.
Though hard pushed at times with Millwall always looking a threat, the defence held firm well enough to feel slightly disappointed at letting Millwall sneak a late equaliser. Richardson did well as did Fox who is in no way a natural centre back. Harding did well providing the cross for Lambert’s goal and otherwise was adequate.
Bialkowski had a good game and managed to make some useful saves. The Saints star at the back was Aaron Martin and in many peoples eyes he was in fact the man of the match. A far cry from his last game where many were disappointed with him.
Nigel was pleased with the way the team handled the pressure and the fact that more youngsters were able to get a chance to show their mettle.
Rickie Lambert was a plus because he took his goal well and that after an enforced three game break.
Jason Puncheon had a good run-out as well after coming back into the first team squad and Nigel was pleased with the way he was welcomed back by the fans and the way in which he played although not 100% fit.
Lee Barnard also got a game for the first time this season and though not at his best he worked hard for the team. His replacement after 75 minutes was Luke Shaw and he was making his debut.
Tadanari Lee came on in the second half for the final half hour and looked sharp making some good runs.
Ben Reeves played the full game and did well enough to give us hope for the future.
All in all with very much a strange looking team Nigel felt that he had seen plenty to make him feel content with our future prospects.
