Nigel Adkins has insisted that Southampton need to continue to average over two points a game if they are to reach the Premier League.

The Saints manager has seen his side make a perfect start at St. Mary’s this season – with the 4-0 win over Watford making it Southampton’s 14th consecutive league home win.

A brace from Rickie Lambert, followed by goals from Guly Do Prado and Lee Holmes gave the south coast outfit a two point lead over Middlesbrough in second place.

And the former Scunthorpe boss is aware that his side need to maintain their great start to the season if they are to join the elite in the top flight.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, he said: “Psychologically it`s good,” he said of the international break.

“One, in respect that we sit top of the league on 22 points after ten games.

“So that`s averaging more than two points a game, and that`s what we need to do.”
