With last night’s confirmation of the permanent transfer for Southampton Academy graduate Sam Gallagher back to former loan club Blackburn Rovers, most fans I suspect will be keeping half an eye on his development at Ewood Park.
Medical Passed – Southampton Confirm 23 y/o’s Expected Departure (Updated)
The 23-year-old forward came through our highly successful youth academy and big things were expected from him, and he has now left for Blackburn with three starting appearances to his name for us, with 23 further showings from the substitutes bench and the return of two goals.
His first spell away from the club was MK Dons in the 2015/16 campaign, but spending 2016/17 with Tony Mowbray was his real breakthrough year, finding the net 12 times across the season. A more mixed spell with Birmingham in 2017/18 saw a further seven goals returned.
7 years at @southamptonfc 🔴⚪️ Full of amazing memories with great people. I would like to thank everyone at the club, all the fans, the players & the staff for helping me throughout my journey, and for all the good… https://t.co/ptEHLCjjkX

In many ways, with the succession of Claude Puel, Mauricio Pellegrino and Mark Hughes in the hot seat, Gallagher’s chance to impress here arguably passed him by as we moved away from youth and turned to panic, so plenty are hoping he can reinvent himself now and kick on further.
Thanks for all you did at Saints, Sam. We all wish you every success at Blackburn and hope one day we'll meet you in the Premier League when you and the Rovers are back where they belong.

Feels like another academy player lost without ever really knowing what could have been if we had the right manager/s. Good luck to him.

Should have been given a decent chance after Pelle left but didn’t happen for some reason. Timing is right and a good move for all parties. All the best.
