Southampton’s first proper game under the charge of new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl saw us defeated once more by Cardiff City but our Austrian gaffer was happy to take the positives post-game and he knows we won’t solve our problems overnight.

Dominating possession, our attacking Achilles Heel again came to the fore as we didn’t do enough with the ball despite the effort being there, and Cardiff predictably did more with less as is their style as they took the 1-0 victory.

Running the post-game numbers statistics website Whoscored gave left back Matt Targett their Man of the Match rating of 7.54 for his efforts on the day.

He was closely followed by ever-reliable goalkeeper Alex McCarthy who picked up 7.24 for his showing between the sticks. Sadly the top five were then completed by players who didn’t get a seven rating – Jan Bednarek (6.96), Oriol Romeu (6.59) and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (6.54).

At least our new gaffer will be under no illusions now as to the task that lies ahead of him and if he saw positives, hopefully, he can quickly build on them as we are now three points from safety.
