It’s been reported this week that Southampton are keeping close tabs on Fulham goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli as we fear that Alex McCarthy is a target for other clubs.

The original report as best as I can tell comes from the Daily Mail so sensible fans will take it with a large pinch of salt, and plenty of others will just consign it to the BS bin that exists in their brain.

The 26-year-old has over 180 professional appearances to his name having come through the Craven Cottage Academy and he has made seven appearances for the promoted side this season, but the last of those came in their defeat to Cardiff City back in October and he has now been replaced by Sergio Rico between the sticks.

No doubt people are looking at McCarthy given his form for us, but with a long-term deal in place and the fact he’s not called Virgil van Dijk, I really don’t see us being interested in a sale and I don’t see him forcing one.

With us yet to offload Fraser Forster, this makes it even more of a non-starter.
