With the majority of Southampton players returning for the testing phase of pre season on Monday, striker Charlie Austin has been giving his thoughts on being back following the holidays.

Speaking to saintsfc Austin admitted that the first day back was tough, but that was nothing compared to Tuesday’s sessions as work already started being ramped up to ensure everybody was ready for the big kick off this year.

‘Yesterday was alright but today was tough. We did the yo-yo endurance test which is the norm, as well as a few other tests in the Academy gym. For me, I just want to stay fit throughout the season and this is an important time to set the basis for that.’

With the holidays always being down time for players to recharge their batteries, Austin went on to say what everybody knows with football thesedays, it’s not like a decade ago where kebabs and alcohol were how players unwound, they each have a strict programme to follow fitness wise and whilst they can let their hair down so to speak, there is a baseline they have to follow and that naturally helps with a pre season return.

‘You have to make sure you maintain yourself over the summer. You need that break both physically and mentally, but you have to keep ticking over to come back and do the yo-yo. It`s the same every year, it`s tough. But you know the international lads have been playing pretty much the whole way through June, so you have to be ready.’
