Reading’s Irish Centre half Alan Bennett has today signed for Saints, reports the club’s official website, on a 6 month loan deal.

Bennett, a 6 foot 2, aggressive defender, was a regular in Reading’s reserve team last season, but has come to St. Mary’s for first team football, and to try and force his way into the Republic of Ireland squad.

Bennett said, ‘It’s time to push on now and like I said, I just want to be playing games and making an impression.’

The arrival of Bennett does see George Burley’s defensive worries ease slightly, with Saints only having 5 recognised defenders at the club; including injured skipper Claus Lundekvam and soon to be suspended Darren Powell.
