Manager Ronald Koeman has confirmed that Ryan Bertrand and Graziano Pelle are back in contention ahead of Wednesday’s game against Watford – and he’s also not ruling out goalkeeper Fraser Forster following his own recovery from a long term knee problem.

Bertrand missed the FA Cup third round defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend with illness, but he’s back in training now, and Pelle has been sidelined for the last four games with a troublesome knee issue.

Both could return to the starting line up on Wednesday as Saints look to get back to winning ways.

Speaking to saintsfc in his pre game press conference, Koeman explained.

‘Ryan is back. He was ill last Saturday, but he had Sunday and he was in on Monday, and he was nearly 100 per cent. He did the session this morning and that’s no problem for tomorrow. Graziano is doing well, he’s back in the squad for tomorrow and that’s positive.’

Moving on to Forster with him making his training and under 21 return against Chelsea last week, but not featuring in Monday’s game against Liverpool, Koeman said that with Maarten Stekelenburg struggling with a tight hamstring following the weekend’s action, Forster was left out on Monday in case we needed him.

‘Maarten Stekelenburg came out with a tight hamstring after the game on Saturday. He did the session normally today (Tuesday), but still we have to wait about his reaction. That was the reason why Fraser didn`t play on Monday for the Under-21s, because we didn`t know what would happen with Maarten on Tuesday.’

With only one under 21 game under his belt following his injury return, Koeman knows it would be a risk, but he’s confident he is close enough to return if absolutely needed.

‘If Maarten is not okay to play, then Fraser Forster will start. He`s doing well – it`s not medical question, the question is sometimes if you`re out for a long time you need game-time. The planning was to do that twice in the Under-21s, but with the tight hamstring of Maarten out of the game last Saturday we couldn`t take that risk to play Forster on Monday.’
