He said that the competition for places is stronger now than at any time since he arrived. With the trip to St Andrews pending he is also savouring the implications of having Billy Sharp in the squad.

He told the Saints Player, ‘We have a good group of players who all want to go out and score and contribute to the team, and that is important because we are going to be playing every three days or so from now on with such a short time to go until the end of the season.’

Billy has been with us for a few days now and with the Saints being the leading scorers in the league, Nigel hopes that we can continue to score them in aplenty saying, ‘We have scored more goals than anyone in the division, and I want us to keep scoring goals because although defences wins Championships, goals win games.’

Birmingham will undoubtedly put us under extreme pressure and so far they have succeeded in avoiding defeat at home this season. They have a big strong team and the giant striker Zigic who will prove to be a right handful.

That Saints have plenty of attacking options makes this a very interesting looking contest. The power of Birmingham against the style of Southampton. The defence will need to be at it’s best and I don’t see any need for the manager to give a motivational speech as the players will be fully wound up and will know how big this game will be for both teams.

Whether he starts with Billy Sharp or not we won’t know until the teamsheet is handed out but from the way he has spoken it is definitely on the cards.
