Cardiff snatched a last grasp winner, through Roger Johnson, against Saints in this opening day encounter with the spoils looking like they were going to be shared. Saints Vital caught up with ‘bluebirdshroom’ editor of Cardiff Vital for his views on the game. Here’s what he had to say:

Bluebirdshroom did you attend the game?
Yes, still completely soaked.

Cardiff predicted a sell out, what was the atmosphere like on opening day?
Pretty good, though has been better – guess the weather dampened spirits somewhat. Saints fans did well and it was good to see them applaud at half time.

What was your shot of the Match?
Steve Thompson’s goal – confidence and cool-ness personified. Looked like he scores them every game for fun, we know he doesn’t!

Your man of the Match?
Kevin McNaughton without question. Simply superb.
For Saints, I thought Svensson at the back was brilliant (if he’s the large ginger one, number 4 or 6?)

What about the moan of the Match?
Dyer and Wright-Phillips got a lot of stick – probably unsuprisingly.

Did you have a prediction before the game?
I predicted a Cardiff City win, wasn’t brave enough for a score though.

How do you think Cardiff will fair this season?
Still undecided, we should be in the top half and much else depends on confidence, luck and other teams.

How do you think Southampton will fair this season?
I know some tipped Saints for relegation, but I don’t think it will come to that. Today’s performance was decent enough away from home but lacking a little creativity.

Are you looking forward to the return game at St Marys?
Sure, it’s even one of our closer matches!
