Sam Gallagher’s move away from Southampton could be one step closer, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

He reported that Blackburn now have a clear run at the 23-year-old forward after Wigan cooled their interest because the fee and wages were just too much for them at this stage.

In the past four seasons, Gallagher has spent time away from St Mary’s with loan spells at Birmingham, Blackburn, and MK Dons. He did remain with the club last season, however, he failed to make an impression in the first-team and his four appearances all came from the bench.

He joined the club as a trainee, but the lack of game time is why he may feel it is the time to move on, of his 22 Premier League appearances, 19 of them have been as a sub.

With the arrival of Che Adams, the club are now overstocked in the striking department, so Gallagher may not even be the last forward to leave this summer.

Gallagher was left at home for this week’s pre-season trip to Austria, along with Charlie Austin, Mario Lemina, Guido Carrillo and Jordy Clasie.

Although the quintet will continue to train for the new season at Staplewood, it is believed they were omitted from the squad to finalise transfers away from the club.
