Saturday saw a rather bizarre transfer story concerning Southampton.

The Mirror claimed an exclusive at the weekend – and it’s gained some traction since in repetition from other outlets – suggesting that former Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater was now heading for an exit from Stamford Bridge a year after joining them for £35million.

In 2017/18 he only made 12 starts for them, with an additional ten showings from the bench so his solitary goal was pretty much a consolation given his more regular featuring for his former club. With new manager, Maurizio Sarri installed at the club, he obviously had his own thoughts moving forward and the paper have now linked Drinkwater with an exit to Southampton, Crystal Palace and possibly a return to Leicester themselves given the move hasn’t worked out for him.

It’s fair to say injuries did hamper 28-year-old’s maiden season at Chelsea but with the new gaffer adding his own signings ahead of the coming campaign, whilst links to Southampton can be called bizarre, it’s certainly not beyond the realms of possibility that he could move on.

The suggestion seems to be a loan move rather than a straight signing, but some Southampton fans are unsure about whether we’d have a genuine interest.
