With a big money arrival from Manchester City for youngster Angus Gunn, he finally made his competitive Southampton bow in Tuesday evening’s EFL Cup clash with Brighton and Hove Albion.
Having come in over the summer for a fee that could reportedly rise to around the £15million mark, the 22-year-old has had to be patient so far this season with Alex McCarthy continuing between the sticks after he replaced Fraser Forster last season, but Gunn’s chance came and despite some moments, he effectively coped with what was thrown at him and kept a debut clean sheet as we booked our place in the third round of the competition.
With his overall showing, Southampton fans were quick to take to social media to pass on their praise of the man and they remained confident he would show significant improvement in the years to come and eventually be our long-term stopper between the sticks.
Angus Gunn eventually needs to get more game time than just cup games. Some league experience will also do him good. He’s been good from what I’ve seen of him. #SaintsFC

Played well: Gunn. Solid, played pretty well: Bednarek, Yoshi, JWP. Top effort: Gallagher. Game changer: Redmond. Final positive, 2080 #saintsFC fans backing all the players, including those off form.

Actually think @AngusGunn01 is our future No1 and could potentially replace @Alex_Macca23 by the end of the season . Remember what happened to Fraser last season? Good to have completion & in #davewatson we have one of the best coaches to keep them on their toes

Good start and getting his debut should push him on to want more given the game time he got last year but I’m pretty sure he’s sensible enough to keep his head down, work hard and take the chances when they come along…he certainly did this week as keepers are there to notch up clean sheets.
