The Times have reported that a consortium of local businessmen are targeting a takeover of The Saints, to get the club back in the Premiership.

The mystery group have already approached Patrick Trant, a construction industrialist and lifelong Southampton fan about getting involved but he wasn’t keen to invest in football, stating simply he had ‘other fish to fry?.

Southampton Leisure Holdings plc is an Aim-listed company and the ownership is fairly evenly spread among it’s directors. Due to this any offer would require the approval of the board for a takeover to take place. If a deal wasn’t forthcoming then a hostile takeover bid could be attempted.

Currently Rupert Lowe owns just 6% of the shares, with the largest investment belonging to the Thompson family, who own around 10%.

At present details of the bid are very sketchy, but maybe Saints will have their own new owners to battle it out with Alexandre Gaydamak in the Championship next season!
