“David Ginola, Thierry Henry, Gianfranco Zola” – BBC Pundit Wowed By New Southampton Stars’ United Efforts

|

Saturday’s Premier League clash with Sheffield United may not have exactly been a classic for Southampton, but it was certainly the right way to get back to proper football following the September international break.

Taking a 1-0 victory over Chris Wilder’s newly promoted side following a second half goal from summer signing Moussa Djenepo, the scoreline doesn’t tell the full story from the game as manager Ralph Hasenhuttl’s charges certainly didn’t have it all their own way, and as fans will be keenly aware, United had a goal of their own chalked off before we found the breakthrough.

Former player and now BBC pundit Garth Crooks knocked up his usual Team of the Week feature for the Beeb following the weekend’s fixtures, and 21-year-old Djenepo had clearly impressed him during his full top flight bow.

“The goal was just wonderful. If this had been scored by David Ginola, Thierry Henry or Gianfranco Zola we would be showing it every week for the next three months. It was Djenepo who produced a little bit of magic in Southampton’s 2-0 defeat of Brighton recently but this is becoming something of a habit. Have the Saints found another Sadio Mane? I think they might have, you know.”

Two goals in four starts is certainly not too shabby for the Mali international, and given he’s still adjusting to life at the club, if he keeps progressing and performing like this we may have a new name on Player of the Season come next May.
