Southampton captain Kelvin Davis has admitted that he wasn’t surprised to hear the news that the club’s parent company, Southampton Leisure Holdings, had entered administration.
Head Coach Mark Wotte broke the news to the players yesterday morning, where he explained just how bad the situation is that Southampton find themselves in.
Davis, however, stated that he and the rest of the squad are ready for the turbulent few weeks that are sure to follow after this week’s events.
He said, “It’s not a great day but I don’t think it was a masive surprise. There have been rumblings all season.
“The timing was a surprise but not one that knocked us off our feet. The club have been moving on the better-paid players and they were only doing that for one reason.
“But the manager explained to us what the situation is with the holding company and the football club so we’re happy to know we won’t be getting a ten-point deduction.
“I’m sure there are a few teams in this league that aren’t happy about that, but the rules are there for a reason.”
Despite Davis’ confidence, there is still a chance the Saints will be deducted points, with the Football League due to meet on Tuesday to discuss the matter.
Already, a number of clubs have expressed their anger at the prospect of Southampton avoiding a 10-point penalty, with Barnsley being the most vocal to date.
With Southampton’s future very much in the balance, the club’s long suffering fans will be hoping that it’s not all bad news.
If the club do manage to avoid a points deduction, Mark Wotte’s side will have a chance of maintaining their Championship status for another season, providing a buyer is found in time to keep the club in existence.
