Saints record signing Rory Delap has moved to Sunderland, after passing a medical and agreeing personal terms with the side currently bottom of The Premiership.

Delap joined Saints in July 2001 for £4.1 million, in hindsight a staggering fee for the recently ineffective utility player, who’s biggest weapon seemed to be his long throw!

That’s probably harsh on Delap, but in truth the fee was his main downfall at St Mary’s, as he never lived up to the expectation that comes with such a large price tag.

He moves to Sunderland on a free transfer after making over 150 appearances for Saints. Hopefully the Irish international can recapture some consistent form for the Black Cats in their relegation battle.

Delap is well known to Mick McCarthy from his time as Ireland manager, Delap’s agent Neil Sillett said:

‘He is looking forward to linking up with Mick McCarthy after working with him with the Republic of Ireland national team.’
