Former Saint Matthew Mills is being strongly linked with a loan move to promotion chasing Birmingham City, following their failure to land the young defender during the January transfer window.
Birmingham are looking to use the loan window, which opens next week for Football League clubs, to their advantage with reports suggesting that they’re willing to pay £1.5m for the 22-year-old, just to secure his services on a loan deal until the end of the season.
Mills was subject of a ‘substantial’ bid from Birmingham on transfer deadline day, although Doncaster rejected the bid and stressed that they didn’t want to be viewed as a selling club.
Birmingham City boss, Alex McLeish, is keen to add a centre-half to his squad, although he has stated he’s unsure whether the move for Mills is set to go through.
Speaking to skysports.com, he said, “I don’t know if it is a goer, but I would be delighted if we can strengthen the position.”
Speaking after Birmingham’s 1-1 draw with Burnley, McLeish went on to say, “It’s not a slight on the others in the squad, but I do believe that it is a position that we need to make a little bit stronger. I really don’t know (about the Mills deal). I do the recommendations and then it is up to the board to do the deals.”
Any potential move could be seen as a positive for Saints and their fans. If Mills were to link up with McLeish at St Andrews, it would considerably weaken relegation rivals Doncaster Rovers, who have been on fine form in recent weeks, having recorded five victories in their last six outings.
