Farewell To Claus

At 19:45 this evening, Claus Lundekvam will be part of a Saints team for the final time in his illustrious career with the south coast men.

Celtic are the opponents, which is not a surprise in itself, but the fact that so many demands have been placed on the game takes it away from the ‘normal’ testimonial game full of laughter and parading of former players. Celtic have stipulated that only three non contract players can turn out for Southampton, which will reduce the chances of the competitiveness running out of the fixture.

More importantly though, Lundekvam will be reunited, if only for a brief spell, with former centre half buddy Svensson. A partnership broken only by injury. The appearance of the two ‘rocks’ together, along with Le Tiss should add some fun into a game that is certain to be taken very seriously given the build up for both teams for the new season.

It should be a fitting occassions for a loyal servant to the cause. I have had the pleasure of playing alongside Claus, and it is unfortunate that his career has been cut short by injury. He’ll be sadly missed on the field. Lets just hope he can stay and be part of the club, off the field.
