Manager Mauricio Pochettino has said that the only thing Southampton lacked in today’s draw against Aston Villa was a ‘cutting edge’ in front of goal.

Had we had that, he has told saintsfc following the game that not only would we have won the match comfortably, but we would’ve definitely have been worthy winners on the day as well.

‘I thought it was a very good game which is why I am so disappointed. We created many chances and had a lot of possession, but were lacking that edge to score. At the end it was a clear penalty that wasn’t given to us and we have been quite unlucky as of late with decisions that haven’t gone our way.’

The gaffer goes on to say that he feels we started very brightly indeed and over the whole 90 minutes we controlled ‘most aspects’ of the game.

‘We knew that Aston Villa would be a very physical side and would try and hit us on the counter attack, but overall we deserved to actually win this game today. We did everything well except actually score.’

With that disappointment addressed, Poch goes on to say that otherwise he was very pleased indeed with our overall performance and our attitude to the match and he has been pleased with our consistency more often that not in continuing to play our game irrespective of the opposition, because we always go out there trying to win and that was exactly what we did this afternoon, as we have done all season.

‘At the same time I am disappointed because we lacked a clinical edge to score more goals, but I am happy with how we played.’
