Charles(Nipper)Miller was living in England as a student, when as a youngster he learned the game.
He was studying at Bannister Court School where amongst other things he learned the art of football.
His first game for Southampton was way back in 1892 in a game with Aldershot Division, which we won 3-1, as a 17 year old.
At just 5’6′ in height he was a quick, stylish player with a large repertoire of ball tricks.
Charles left for Sao Paulo in October 1894 just as Saints joined the Southern League. His immortality rests partly with the fact that he took with him the first football rule book to Sao Paulo.
The Hampshire rule book and a load of footballs was the start of the Brazilian love affair with our beautiful game. With him was another Brazilian schooled in Europe.
Antonio da Costa was taught in Switzerland and also learned his football away from home. Antonio assisted Charles in the organisation of Brazils first soccer competition, La Liga Paulista.
Charles Miller is hero worshipped in Brazil but little known in Southampton. We all know how well Brazil has done in the football world.
It is hoped that the early investment of the old Saints club is about to be repaid with the acquisition of Guly.
