Skipper Jose Fonte has said that Southampton have to put the Stoke disappointment behind them quickly and put all their thoughts into the ‘massive’ game against Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

Spurs and former gaffer Mauricio Pochettino visit St Mary’s this Saturday with both teams effectively battling for the same European places this season.

Speaking to saintsfc as our build up to the match takes place in training this week, Fonte explained.

‘We were extremely disappointed because I felt that we played the right game, we played good football – we just didn`t take the chances when we could. We`re kicking ourselves. That`s why we came into the half-time talk and we did the job in the first half, but we knew they would try something different in the second and they started with a lucky goal.’

Fonte went on to say that going into the game against Stoke the squad didn’t consider losing, we were focused on putting in a performance and the gutting thing was we got that performance, but again just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.

‘We need to pick ourselves up because there`s still five games to go, so we still have a lot to play for – you know, beat some records. Like I said there`s a lot to play for and we need to keep going, keep digging, because the Premier League is unpredictable and you never know. It`s a massive game next weekend. I don`t think we need to bring the spirits up, because it`s a massive game. We know what`s at stake, so we will forget the Stoke game and concentrate on the next one.’

Fonte went on to say that being Spurs and Pochettino, the players are more interested in getting back to winning ways and that’s the only motivation we need – the players don’t need any help and anything else is just a distraction.

‘We don`t need any extra motivation. The game itself is going to be a massive one. We need to move on quickly. Tottenham are close in the table and we want to finish above them. We are at home. For us as players it`s just another big game against a team that is next to us that we want to beat.’

With a sense of disappointment following the game because of the blow it meant to our Champions League aspirations, Fonte said that obviously there’s a disappointment but we also need to be mindful of the season we’ve had in total.

‘Obviously, you need to put into perspective what we achieved so far. We had five or six new players. The front line is completely new. We know what the expectations were in the beginning of the season, we are happy with the season we have had, but we want to finish on a high. Now that we are in this position we need to keep fighting to achieve the highest position possible. It`s a very difficult ask for the top four but while it`s still mathematically possible we need to keep fighting and winning games.’
