Former Southampton manager Dave Merrington has slammed Southampton for their recent form.
He told the Echo: ‘Conceding so many goals in the last half hour tells you that it could be down to two things – one, it could be a lack of fitness, and two it could be mental.
‘I would look to work extremely hard on defending the final third of the pitch, because Saints haven’t been defending their 18-yard box well.
‘Against Cardiff when they conceded the first goal you could see there was panic stations. But they had looked relaxed at the end of the first half, I couldn’t see them losing.
‘But because it’s happened before, they became panicky when they conceded after leading.’
‘The players need to show some character and take some responsibility – from what I can see, they haven’t been doing that all the time.
‘They have conceded a few goals from set-plays – so what does that tell you?
‘It says that players haven’t been communicating that well, haven’t been taking responsibility that well.
