Southampton are again being linked with Inter Milan midfielder Joao Mario and most fans will probably remember his name from a loan spell with West Ham during the second half of the 2017/18 campaign.

Having fallen out of favour at his current club, the 25-year-old Portuguese player headed to the London Stadium last January and he took in 14 appearances for the Hammers, scoring twice in their Premier League campaign.

With his fortunes not changing at the San Siro in 2018/19, the club did try and offload him during the last transfer window and I remember a vague link to him then but nothing obviously came of it.

Calciomercatoweb have again linked him with us this week, and they claim that we have an interest in trying to secure his services come the January transfer window, but that we’ll be up against competition from Wolverhampton Wanderers (predictably), Leicester City and Fulham.

I’m not sure another midfielder is exactly what we need to be honest, but Joao Mario was reasonably impressive at West Ham so maybe the attacking midfielder would help unlock the best from our largely misfiring forwards?

To be honest, I wouldn’t put much stock in the report as it sounds like typical agent led guff just reminding clubs he’s available more than anything from my internet aided translation.
