Goalkeeper Fraser Forster has given his thoughts on the victory over Watford last night, and his own return to a first team pitch following his lengthy spell out with injury.

Having spent a long time on the sidelines and only having had one Under 21 game under his belt, a tight hamstring for Maarten Stekelenburg meant that our England goalie got the call for a first team return earlier than anybody had expected.

Speaking to saintsfc about the game against Watford and the two nil win, he explained that it was a good on to return to having last played in March.

‘It was brilliant – I wasn`t overworked by any stretch of the imagination. It was a fantastic team performance. It`s a performance all the lads can be pleased with. The manager came up with a good game-plan and we stuck to it. Credit where it`s due, we did well and hopefully we can build on it. It was nice to get another 90 minutes under my belt. It means a bit more confidence will come back. I`ll just work as hard as I can in training and see where it takes us. It will give us a lot of confidence – everyone did amazingly well. It will be fantastic to take that forward and build on it.’

What really pleased Forster was that in the end the game made him feel like he’d never been away.

‘It felt like any other game and I felt like I hadn`t been away. I`ve played so many times with Ryan Bertrand and José Fonte, and I played with Virgil van Dijk at Celtic. We have a great relationship and understanding and they performed really well. They really limited them to few opportunities. It was a fantastic team performance and so easy to slot back in.’

Moving onto himself, he also spoke about feeling better than ever now he was back after his lengthy recovery time, and whilst it’s been tough he’s pleased to have come through it the way he did so now he wants to make up for lost time.

‘It`s been tough, anyone who has had a long-term injury will tell you how tough it is at times. But the comeback has gone quite quickly and I feel I`ve come back physically better than I was before. That`s credit to the medical staff and the fitness guys for all the work they`ve put in with me. It`s been a tough ten months – there have been good days and bad days, but we`ve got a fantastic medical department. I`ve been very fortunate to have the treatment I`ve had and I can`t thank them enough for what they`ve done for me.’
