With speculation surrounding Saints’ interest in Jack Butland growing, Nigel Adkins has confirmed he will not be looking to bring another keeper into the club, as he’s happy with what he has.

Speaking to Sky Sports Adkins explained.

‘We have a young goalkeeper in Paulo Gazzaniga, who is going to be the future of this football club. We have two experienced goalkeepers in Kelvin Davis and Artur Boruc. They are the three goalkeepers we’ve got now and I do not anticipate another goalkeeper coming in during this window.’

Adkins did confirm though that he was looking to strengthen in the outfield positions this window.

‘I think you’ve always got to improve. You can’t stand still. Whatever we’ve done in the past is in the past, we’ve got to keep looking to the forward. We have a good recruitment department, we have targeted several players. I would like to think that during the course of the window a couple of people will be coming in.’

  • Again that must be a big lift for our youngster. I think it also shows that Nigel has enough faith in Boruc for the now.

  • Yup, Boruc as the experience to bring on Gazza without the pressure so he can take over in a couple of seasons. Saying it so pubicly must have done Gazzaniga’s confidence the world of good. Wonder if we’ll be looking to get him out on loan to the Champ for more match experience?

  • Not sure we can afford to as that sadly would leave us with Kelvin as back-up and I think his time has gone. Much as he has done for us I just don’t think he has any more to offer.

  • I take the point but I don’t have that worry really, I think we could send Gazza out for 93 days on a youth loan but we could recall at any point if needed anyway if I’ve remembered youth loans correctly.
