Former Saints striker Charlie Wayman passed away on Sunday, aged 84.

Wayman signed for Southampton in October 1947 from Newcastle, for a club record fee of £10,000. Saints were tempted to spend such a fee after Charlie had scored a hat trick against us in the FA Cup the previous season.

He went on to have the highest scoring ratio of any striker in the club’s history, scoring 73 goals in 100 appearances before returning north to Preston and later ending his career at Middlesbrough.
