With Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl confirming this week that it was a ‘possibility’ that striker Charlie Austin could be moving onto pastures new before this Thursday’s January transfer window deadline, it didn’t take some in the media long to start suggesting potential incoming replacements and a popular one seems to be Birmingham City’s Che Adams.

Sky Sports have now claimed we have made a firm ‘approach’ to sign 22-year-old Adams and with 14 goals in 30 appearances in the season of 2018/19, the youngster has seen his stock grow and the suggestion is we are one of a number of clubs interested in his services.

Sky point out it’s an informal approach at this stage and no offer has actually been lodged for the former Sheffield United graduate but he would certainly tick the ‘youth’ boxes given his age, further development potential and in 112 starting appearances and 48 substitute showings, he has found the back of the net 45 times.

Birmingham do maintain he’s not for sale, but given they are under an embargo, whilst a deal this January might not be doable as presumably they wouldn’t be able to replace him, a buy with an immediate loan back until the end of the year – if we do have an interest – would be a way of breaking any potential deadlock.
