Hasenhuttl “Comfortable” With Southampton’s Place In The Pecking Order Of Football

|

Although it’s been a slow start to life in the 2019/20 Premier League campaign with back to back losses for Southampton, there were certainly more positives to take from the Liverpool clash as manager Ralph Hasenhuttl’s summer signings continue to bed in at St Mary’s Stadium and adjust to our top flight.

In a recent interview with outlet TV2, our gaffer once again spoke about the overall philosophy of the club when it comes to our transfer dealings – ie snap up young talent, develop them but with an acknowledgement that they are assets that will be sold at the right price.

It’s a system we know well at Southampton and in previous years we had used it to our advantage before we lost the plot and struggled in more recent seasons, but when used right, although there is an element of disappointment to that philosophy, most fans are happy when we see that ‘profit’ reinvested so we remain competitive and aren’t actually weakened.

“We know our philosophy. It’s developing players who can move on to bigger clubs after a couple of years. That’s the way we are, and we’re comfortable with that. We cannot have the same goals as Liverpool and Manchester City. But we can have our goals, and last year we beat some of the big clubs. It means a lot. We learn a lot from it. Either we win – or we learn.”

We’re also not the only club that needs to operate in that manner, but the aim has to be with every sale we further strengthen the group and we always have the next prospect coming through the ranks so they can seize their chance when the gap appears.

This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, but it’s a system Hasenhuttl remains confident in and that is the positive bonus here. Growth may be slow as we look to push back up the Premier League table, but at least it appears we’re no longer blindly panicking and slipping backwards.
