Wednesday’s Premier League action saw Southampton welcome Fulham to St Mary’s Stadium for a relegation scrap.

With back to back defeats for manager Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side and ongoing striker problems with our injury list and the form of others, ahead of the game the Austrian had made a point of saying that we needed to carry a goal threat from all areas of the pitch and two midfield players answered his call as Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse struck twice in the opening 45 minutes to return all three points in a 2-0 victory.

With plenty of positives from the gaffer as he met with the media following the game, saintsfc have him crediting the fans for creating a great atmosphere that certainly helped the players to give their best on the evening.

“It was a massive support from outside today. In every second of the game, you could feel everybody knows what it was about to win this game. That was very good to see and that is the reason I have to thank all the supporters here today in the stadium. I think they saw a team that knows how important it was to give everything for Southampton Football Club. Together we have had a fantastic evening. We need a few more until the end. If we have them, it’s a good chance to stay. It was very professional from our team today. We put a little bit more experience on the pitch – it was clear this team (Fulham) were coming here looking at their last chance to come closer to us. Although they had more ball possession, I think we defended it very, very concentrated, and it was a clinical, professional performance.”

Saturday sees us make the trip to Old Trafford to face Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s Manchester United side and given the form they are in, I think most would take a point now just to keep us unbeaten and grow confidence a touch further ahead of the run in.
