Southampton midfielder Steven Davis caused a bit of a stir this week on social media as he was off representing Northern Ireland during the September international break.
The 33-year-old missed a chunk of the 2017/18 campaign with injury only making two appearances for the club following the turn of January, and manager Mark Hughes has used him sparingly so far in 2018/19 as he got pitch time in the EFL Cup victory over Brighton and Hove Albion at the end of August.

He was on show in midweek for Northern Ireland though as they took victory over Israel, and Davis himself found the back of the net which would’ve been a confidence boost for him.
He said when he left Rangers he wanted to go back there one day. Not sure how this changes anything

He says he wants to go ‘one day’. Doesn’t mean he wants to go there now ????
He said the exact same thing 6 years ago and has given us nothing but 100% since. Honesty don’t understand why you’re making such a big deal over it

The bloke is about 8th choice centre mid, well into his 30’s and is fully aware his Saints days are over… what’s wrong with him being open to going back to his old club?

Okay I’ll bite. I really hope you’re joking, sadly I’m pretty sure that you’re not. Give your head a wobble. Club captain and a great servant who has recognised he’s unlikely to get much football here. Always said he wanted to play for Rangers again anyway. #saintsfc

In fairness, it looks like the guy made it look like he was taking a picture rather than a video. He said 'one day' uncomfortably as he was basically trying to get away from the fella. It's no secret that he loves Rangers, so not hugely suprising.

I think he is past his best but he’s clearly not an awful player with an awful attitude is he? He’s been a great servant and by all accounts a model professional. Don’t think we can begrudge him returning to Rangers as he won’t be getting much game time with #saintsfc anymore.

I think, Rob, you're overreacting a little bit. You're also putting 2+2 together and making 5. I agree Davis is not what he was, but he has been tremendous for us and I still admire his on field intelligence.

With semi-regular links suggesting a return to former club Rangers could be on the cards in the future, especially if game time isn’t forthcoming in the first half of this season, I’m not actually sure what the problem is here – he was hardly likely to say anything else yet you’d be forgiven for thinking he’d downed tools or refused to play.
I’m just pleased I’m not alone in not getting it.
