‘Hi it’s Gareth’: Southampton ace has the talent to represent England for years to come – Opinion

“It was in the summer and I was already on my holiday, and I just got back into my hotel room and I got the call and he said ‘hi it’s Gareth’, and I replied with ‘who?’”

Not many England youth players would connect the dots that Gareth Southgate was calling them to join up with the squad for an international training camp, yet Angus Gunn isn’t your typical Three Lions name.

The son of former Scotland international Bryan Gunn, the Southampton shot-stopper recently admitted in an interview with BBC Sport that it will be his dream to represent England one day on a senior level, and the 23-year-old keeper has the talent to make this a reality.

It is no secret that Southgate is an advocate of promoting international talent from within, favouring players who have represented England at every level, and this is something Gunn knows far too well.

The Southampton number 26 has represented England at every age group from 16-years onwards, and even winning silverware along the way as Gunn was part of the 2016 team that won the prestigious Toulon Tournament, and his development from a third-choice keeper at Manchester City to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s trusted number one goes to show the talent the youngster has.

With Jordan Pickford, for now, the clear England number one, Gunn has both the motivation and the talent to not only challenge himself to become an integral member of the Three Lions squad but also succeed the Everton keeper as the nation’s starting man between the sticks.

Gunn has come leaps and bounds over the 2016 Toulon Tournament, and this season the Southampton keeper is yet again showing no sign of slowing down with the south coast side.
