With the March international break in full flow, Southampton legend Rickie Lambert has backed former Liverpool colleague Danny Ings to fire the club to safety in the remaining weeks of the 2018/19 Premier League campaign.

The 26-year-old made the loan switch from Anfield to St Mary’s Stadium in early August and we’ve more than seen what he’s capable of doing in his 19 appearances (18 starts) as he’s found the back of the net eight times in those games.

He has been hit with injury though, and last took to the pitch for us at the beginning of February as we took a point from Burnley at Turf Moor.

On Wednesday, he returned to the pitch following a seven-week hamstring lay off though, taking in 45 minutes in our 3-1 behind closed doors victory over Queens Park Rangers.

Speaking to the Daily Echo this week, our former striker said of Ings.

“If Danny’s fit, he’ll score goals. I definitely thought Danny was going to do well, I thought he was a good fit for Southampton, having known from our brief time together at Liverpool. Prowsey and Nathan Redmond are playing very well, they’ve got to get people like that on the ball and if they keep solid at the back I think they will score the goals. They’ve got more than enough when you look at their forward line.”

We’re all hoping Lambert’s prediction here proves to be right, we just have to hope his injury issues are now behind him and that he can quickly get some form.
