Manager Mauricio Pochettino has said that today’s win over Cardiff was very important for the squad, because it will provide them with that natural confidence boost following our recent winless run.

Whilst confidence in the camp doesn’t appear to have taken a hit, especially with the positives and public facing interviews the players have done, on some levels it would’ve done because doubts would creep in and it doesn’t matter how professional you are or how many sports psychologists you have access to, a bad run has an effect, so even if confidence on the face of it didn’t need an artificial boost, the relief the squad will be feeling from a victory again now will probably have been palpable in the dressing room after the game – especially as the win was pretty convincing.

First win since November 9th and first clean sheet since October 26th according to what I’m reading (it’s Boxing Day I’m not going to check!) so even if the players really did believe a win like this was around the corner again, they will be free-er in the next match because it’s now arrived.

Anyway, speaking to saintsfc following the match, Poch said.

‘It was very important that we won today because it allowed us to get back to winning ways again. It cut the run of bad results of the last few games, and it’s so important to have that winning feeling and we gained that in a very good way. It was an amazing performance.’

Poch was especially pleased to see us get the rewards for our display on the day and he goes on to credit us as being ‘quality and precise’ for the whole 90 minutes, but obviously especially the first 30 minutes or so where we really did put the game beyond them.

The clean sheet he knows will also be a massive boost for the players again, and he pleased to see them have that relief because apart from moments, he doesn’t feel he can criticise many of our recent performances even though results have been what we hoped for.

Onwards and upwards again now hopefully.
