A consortium of Irish businessmen have placed a bid to buy Southampton Football Club.

The consortium made a last gasp attempt to buy the club and have jumped to the front of the cue as the sale of the club heats up once again.

The group of two have £500,000 ready to put down as a deposit which could grant them exclusivity of the club.

The eager Irish businessmen have overtaken the previous front-runners, the Pinnacle group led by Saints legend Matthew Le Tissier.

Saints administrator Mark Fry is hopeful that he can announce a preferred bidder by the end of tomorrow.

He told the Daily Echo: “We have got a number of people at the final stages and we are trying to get them all to get over the line.

“I am hopeful that it will be within the next 48 hours.”
