Earlier this week Southampton confirmed that we had another lad impressing off the production line in the Academy and Will Smallbone had now penned a two-year contract extension with us in light of his continued development.

The 18-year-old has signed up at St Mary’s Stadium until the summer of 2021 and he will complete the decade having joined us aged 8. The Irish youth international is now a regular in Radhi Jaidi’s Under 23 setup and his versatility sees him perform in a few midfield roles for the club.

With new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl having more of an eye on youth, there’s every reason for optimism in the youth levels again and Smallbone referenced first team time for Michael Obafemi, Yan Valery and Tyreke Johnson whilst speaking to saintsfc. He was also rightly delighted with his new deal.

“It’s amazing, I’ve been at the club now for quite a while so it feels good to first be offered a contract and then to get it signed. It’s a dream come true. It’s a really proud moment for my family; I remember I got the call after the Manchester United game and Craig Fleming told me that they were looking to offer me a new contract. I told my mum straight away and she was just so proud.”
