Back in the January transfer window, Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl spoke a lot about trimming the group although we did have the odd potential incoming link as work continued in the background. One such link was Genk defender Joakim Maehle.

Player Leaves Door Wide Open For Summer Southampton Return

The suggestion back in early February was that we made a move for the 21-year-old right back late on in the window for a speculated £10-12million, but being that close to the deadline, the Belgian club were unwilling to sanction his departure as they wouldn’t be able to replace him.

The Danish under 21 international spoke sensibly about our interest and left the door wide open for a possible summer’s deal, and in a recent interview with BT the topic of the move came up again.

“I know it was very concrete – but I really don’t know how close it was. The club wouldn’t sell. And I have no idea how much more was needed before they would sell. It is certain that there was a lot of interest from Southampton. Hopefully there will be a chance, and then we will see what happens. I’m not on the track to make a summer shift. But there is no doubt that if there is any interest that I feel might be right for me, then I will look twice at it.”

With his stock continuing to rise in the Belgian top flight, clearly he still appears open to a move should an agreement be struck, but we’ll have to see if the emergence of Academy graduate Yan Valery has now changed our gaffer’s thoughts.
