Manager Ronald Koeman believed Southampton deserved more in the one nil loss to Everton at the weekend.

With an early first half goal enough to give them all three points, Koeman was frustrated and disappointed at the full time whistle as he knows there wasn’t an awful lot between the sides, they just made that one chance count.

Speaking to saintsfc following the game, the gaffer explained the least he thought we deserved was a point as we had good spells on top that we should’ve capitalised on.

‘I`m very disappointed about the result, but not disappointed about the performance of the team. I think we played on a good level, we had some good chances in the first half and we received an unlucky goal about the corner in the second situation. That made it more difficult, but still we did everything and we tried everything until the last second but it wasn`t enough. Normally if we score the first goal we are looking very comfortable, but even after the 1-0 to Everton we kept our organisation on the pitch and we tried everything to score the goal. The frustration is all about if you get the chances and you don`t score. But we deserved more than we got, that`s football.’

With seven now remaining the message from the manager was clear though, stay positive and just do all we can now to try and secure the dream of European competition next season.

‘We play on a regular good level and maybe only in front it is a little bit more difficult to create, but it also depends on the opponent. If they defend like Everton did then it`s more difficult. After the 1-0 they dropped back more and that`s tough. I`m proud of what the players showed and the support of the fans. We keep going.’

What the gaffer did concede is that in all likelihood that was an end to Top Four hopes, but certainly not Europa League hopes – but again things change in football and all we can do is focus on our games and then see what happens elsewhere of a weekend.

‘Yes. Normally yes. You never know, everybody has difficult games to play but it`s not realistic at this moment to think the first four positions on the table. It`s more realistic to think Europa League, but the Europa League for us is like Champions League for Manchester United and for Arsenal, that difference we know.’
