Manager Ronald Koeman has said that the players have all returned from the international break in good confidence, form and we go into the weekend’s game against Everton looking for a win and all three points.

Speaking to saintsfc following the fortnight’s break, Koeman was pleased that nobody came back with any knocks, but obviously delighted that Graziano Pelle, James Ward-Prowse and Shane Long all return having scored for their countries.

‘It`s always good to have an international break, it`s nice because for the manager and technical staff it`s a nice break without a lot of players in the season for Southampton. It`s important to have everybody back but the preparation is a short time until Saturday, then always you hope everyone comes back in good physical shape and you can use everyone at the weekend.’

With players away, he doesn’t believe that it would’ve been an unwelcome distraction for them as most played and importantly played well with good results for their nation and for him that’s always a positive as you don’t want people coming back disappointed.

Speaking about our international goalscorers he went on to add.

‘It was important for Graziano because of course, if we talk about strikers, you talk about scoring goals. I think it`s important for his confidence. It was a great goal. Like the goal of Shane, he`s playing with a lot of confidence in the last few games, he came in just before the end and he scored the important 1-1 against Poland. Prowsey has been working hard and doing well. He`s an offensive midfielder, you expect that as the coach he will score goals and make assists. Maybe he`s been a bit unlucky, maybe that`s opened it up for him now.’

With left back Ryan Bertrand being a late addition to Roy Hodgson’s squad following injuries, the gaffer went on to say that he was delighted he did get a few minutes on the pitch in the friendly against Italy as it would’ve been another boost of confidence for him picking up that extra cap.

‘I`m happy for him, it was only two minutes but it is a cap, that`s what I told him. It`s important for the player to be on the list for the manager of the English national team. If you are on the list they are watching you and if you keeping fighting and showing your qualities in our team, then maybe it`s not the last call you will get.’

The only downside to our international window so far was Steven Davis who came off at half time in Northern Ireland’s game against Finland and also Matt Targett who picked up an issue.

‘Davo is a problem for the weekend. He`s doubtful. He came off after 45 minutes in the game against Finland with a groin problem. We have to wait until tomorrow to make a decision. Normally Matt is okay, he did part of the training session today and if there is no reaction about that he will train tomorrow too.’
