Manager Ronald Koeman covered a number of topics in his pre Crystal Palace FA Cup third round press conference.

In no particular order from saintsfc other than the order I click on the tabs, Koeman explained firstly that with stuttering and disappointing Premier League form of late, he was looking for the Crystal Palace match to be a catalyst for the side again now we are in the second half of the campaign.

‘We like to make a good run in this competition and we take it very seriously. In the past we didn’t make a lot of changes in the team and I think it’s not the moment now to do more changes, because what we need is to continue what we are doing and, of course, finally to have a better result.’

‘After the last two defeats, against West Ham and Norwich, we need a win, we need a win for the fans, we need a win for ourselves, and we did very hard work for this week. We need a win to have the belief and to have the confidence in the team that we can reach everybody. But there are enough examples in the past that we still have a strong team.’

In terms of team news for the game, striker Graziano Pelle remains missing for this weekend with the knee injury that has kept him out for the last three matches, but Koeman was hopeful of having him back for the midweek clash against Watford.

‘Graziano will not be involved this weekend, but we have good hope he will be ready for next Wednesday. That will be good news.’

In other team news, midfielder Victor Wanyama remains missing as he serves his two game ban following his second dismissal of the season against Norwich, and the gaffer confirmed that words had been had over the ‘unnecessary’ dismissal in the game.

‘That’s always important that you have good competition in all the lines in your team, and we know with Jordy Clasie, with Oriol Romeu, with Prowsey, Steven Davis, Harry Reed who makes his first minutes last week, we have enough competition. Of course, we miss Wanyama, because he’s a good player, he’s a strong player, he’s a physical one – what you need also against Crystal Palace. But the rest of the players that we have, they’ve showed their qualities and they’ve showed they can play, that’s no problem.’

With questions turning to the January transfer window, Koeman confirmed we were looking to bring a striker in but his plans for the month remain the same and they haven’t been effected by recent results.

‘That`s not changed. We are looking to get somebody in. Yes (just a striker). What I don`t like is talking about names, about players, because these players they play for a team and it`s an internal discussion about players.’
