Manager Ronald Koeman has said that the lads had to show great character and spirit to see off a troublesome West Ham side yesterday.

West Ham took the lead in the game but midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin put us back on level terms just before the half time break, before he then grabbed his brace in the second half leaving striker Graziano Pelle to secure the win with our third – our first league win of the campaign, and speaking to saintsfc following the game, the gaffer couldn’t have been happier with our efforts on the day.

‘After the first two results, we needed points – and we got the points. We had good character. After the equaliser, we had the belief and the spirit to play for the win. The big difference between West Ham and our team was that we had the spirit to press, to play and score goals.’

Koeman goes on to say that he believes we are a much better team that West Ham anyway, and that difference in the game he felt we created and then took full advantage of and for him now we have got our first win and the three points, it now makes our start to the season ‘okay’ as we now head into the international break.

Of course now the aim for the manager is to see us continue that and hopefully pick up another victory when the players return to club action, but the obvious worries of players going away to represent their countries and then coming back with injuries is obviously a concern.

With the closure of the transfer window almost upon us, Koeman added that there was ‘no clear news’ at this stage, but he thinks it’s possible there will be some movement, but we’ll have to wait and see if any deals in progress can be got over the line.
