Adam Lallana has revealed he was shocked to find out he had been selected by Roy Hodgson for the England team, but he was flushed with pride at the decision.

Speaking to saintsfc after discovering he had been drafted into the squad for the Ukraine game, Lallana said.

‘I’m totally shocked to be honest, and I didn’t think the gaffer was being serious when he called to tell me this morning. I must have asked him if he was having me on a dozen times! It’s such a proud accomplishment to be called up, it’s probably the proudest moment of my career so far.’

Lallana has represented England at other levels, but this is his first senior call up and although he doesn’t expect to figure heavily, he’s going to enjoy the experience regardless.

‘I’m looking forward to the experience, I’ve been called up quite late so I’m realistic in accepting I might not be that heavily involved. Even if I don’t get the chance to feature, it’s nice to know that you are in the thoughts of the national manager.’

Lallana was also modest enough to comment it wasn’t just about him, the call up reflects positively on all the work Southampton have done over the past few years to re-establish ourselves in the top flight.

‘I think it reflects really well on the club, and I think everyone can be proud of it. It shows how far Southampton have come. I’m sure I won’t be the last person to represent our country as some of the young lads can go all the way.’
