It’s being heavily reported in the press today that Rickie Lambert is set for a medical tomorrow at Liverpool, and that a tentative 2 year deal with the Merseyside club has now been agreed to.

The most common fee talked about is £4million upfront plus add ons making the deal potentially around the £9million mark all in if reports are correct.

It appears the club felt they had little option but to let the player talk to the potential suitors, but it certainly flies in the face of our chairman’s comments about being in charge of transfers whilst we awaited a new manager.

Lambert has apparently given quotes saying the move makes all the sense for him and it’s a bit of a dream given he came through their Academy many years ago, so for him it will no doubt feel like he’s gone full circle and this will certainly be the transfer that ‘makes’ him financially for life, so you can hardly begrudge his interest given what he has done for the club.

Whatever the truth may be, the club’s reluctance to block the move, given they reportedly did the same back in January with West Ham, long term could make sense as obviously if this is a move Lambert would welcome, and we blocked it, players have the player and an unmotivated Rickie is not an asset for us.

His stock is also high at the moment and yes with a good World Cup we could command more, but equally it could go the other way.

This was always the fear though, and really just have to hope Lambert is the only one out – however unlikely that seems to be.
