The Football League’s average attendances are at their highest for 47 years.

16.4m fans attended matches this season, the second highest behind the 18.1m people who attendended matches in 1959/60, which obviously also included England’s top tier.

Football League chairman Lord Mawhinney told the BBC: ‘It is very encouraging. These figures underline the tremendous commitment shown by fans towards clubs.

‘Our challenge now is to move attendance figures past the 17m mark.’
